Introduction to Farm Succession Planning
A FREE two-part virtual workshop
Workshop Dates
October 1 & 3, 2025, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm PT / 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm MT
This free workshop introduces participants to farm succession planning and the steps involved in a farm or ranch transfer within or outside of the family. The first workshop session will provide an overview of getting started with farm or ranch transfer including clarifying values, vision and goals, and identifying the people who need to be involved in the transfer process. The second workshop session will discuss the importance of assessing your current financial position and future needs, the position and needs of other parties involved in the farm/ranch transfer, and identifying key professional service providers that can support incoming farmers and ranchers and exiting owners during the transfer process. The workshop will conclude with resources and tools for taking the next steps to develop a farm succession/farmland transfer plan.
This workshop is open to all! The Introduction to Farm Succession Planning workshop is designed for current landowners and incoming producers who are interested in learning the steps involved in farm succession planning. This includes landholders who may be retiring, planning their estates, or simply want to know more about making land available for a new generation and young and beginning farmers and ranchers looking for land to farm.
This workshop will be recorded and the recording link will be sent to all who register.
About the Instructor - Colette DePhelps
Colette DePhelps is a University of Idaho Extension Community Food Systems Area Educator located in Moscow, Idaho. DePhelps leads the University of Idaho Extension’s Idaho Women in AgTM and Idaho Cultivating SuccessTM small farm education programs. She is a member of the American Farmland Trust’s Transitioning Land to a New Generation national team, is certified as an American Farmland Trust Land Access Trainer and an International Farm Transition Network Farm Succession Coordinator.
