  • Skylines Farm Sheep and Wool in Harvard, ID

  • The UI Organic Farm, University of Idaho Moscow Campus

Certificates Awarded in 2009 for Cultivating SuccessTM

A program certificate Level 1 in Cultivating SuccessTM was awarded to Kristen Koenig, a community member from Moscow, ID for completing a Sustainable Small Farming and Ranching course at Quillisascut Farm School, the 2007 Field Analysis of Sustainable Food Systems course, and an on-farm internship at the WSU Organic Farm.

Five University of Idaho students are currently working toward the UI Academic Certificate in Sustainable Small Acreage Farming and Ranching.

New and Ongoing Projects in Idaho

USDA Higher Education Challenge Grant (2008-2011): expanding on-farm educational experiences on university farms, evaluating interdisciplinary and field based undergraduate learning in food and agricultural systems, and development of a UI senior level capstone course on sustainable food & agriculture systems

Western SARE Research and Extension Grant (2005 - 2009): Using farmer and rancher input to develop and implement experiential education opportunities for beginning farmers and ranchers, and evaluating these experiences using a series of 9 case studies to document results.  Outreach related projects are still in the works for 2010.

Goals for 2010

  • Certifying more Farmer Mentors to the CS program

  • Developing and piloting an online course in Sustainable Small Farming and Ranching for community members through a grant from Western Center for Risk Management Education

  • Review and adapting our program structure in lieu of budget concerns and staff changes
